I love school visits. I love the fans I get from the visits even more. My office is literally covered with drawings and stories I’ve received from students I met at the schools I’ve visited. Some of the heroes they’ve created are insanely creative!
I recently got a big stack of drawings from an entire fourth grade class. There were characters like Butter Man who shoots butter out of his ears and has literal butter fingers. I likely can’t catch a football, but he’s probably great to have around when its time to bake. I also met Bin Man. Bin Man carries a bin. He can’t smell or see, and he is always happy. I don’t know exactly what he brings to the table in an epic good v. evil standoff, but its a fun idea.
Most recently, I got a drawing of Robot Boy. He has very general powers in that he can simply control everything. Seems like that would make him a very worth adversary.
The best part of the drawing though was the message on the back.
The straight up ask to be “in” the next book is awesome! I love the comfort kids have to ask that kind of question. I would actually have loved to work the kid in, but they didn’t put their name on the drawing. You can kind of see in the picture that they wrote their phone number on the picture, which is also awesome, but the teacher seems to have wisely erased it before she sent a nine year-old’s number through the mail.
This is the world’s greatest part time job.
